Gold Key Portfolio

So I was fortunate enough to have my work selected by Scholastic Art & Writing as a Gold Key Portfolio.

It's a bitter-sweet win as my classmates had a ton of award-worthy artwork as well.

Emulation Project

Lexie's is the top image.

I re-imagined this using my two hands forming a bird, like the bond that can't be be broken between these two beautiful cardinals.  I used an aperture of f/3.2 so that I could keep some detail of the tree, but also meet the requirements of having no hard lines.

Silk Painting

For my silk painting I wanted to use a mandala that emulated a dream catcher.  I tried to use a lot of colour theory to make it have more of a calming effect.  I wanted to use cool colours to kind of absorb any energy that was present in the environment.  My goal for adding the purple was to tie the entire piece together and add some luxury to the decor.
I think that I got a high 2 on this because I feel like the colours are a little too blocky and simple. The lack of texture really bothers me in this painting.

Charter Day Weekend

Over the long weekend, I went to our mountain home and took a lot of pictures.  I explored HDR some more as well as greyscale HDR.

Weekly Challenge 5

For this weekly challenge, I chose to do culinary photography.  I made a salad of shaved turnip, cherry tomatoes, mint, dill, and a pansy all on a bed of baby arugula and glazed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

October's Leaves

Mirrored Fall

Narrative Series

For this narrative series I focused on the emotions that come along with losing a person.  Losing a person doesn't always have to be caused by death.  The loss of deep relationships and friendships evoke many of the same emotions and feelings as the loss of people in my life from death.

Weekly Challenge 4

This week I was challenged to photograph smoke.
In both of these photos I used some smoke brushes to add some definition to the incense smoke that I took pictures of.

For the lighter, I set up my camera on a tripod using manual focus and a cable shutter release to have continuous shooting in locked mode.  I used a surgeon's lamp for the lighting on a black poster-board backdrop.

Monthly Photos - September

I think it's safe to say that the crispness in the air and the lack of that warm summer breeze in the mornings are some signs that fall is here!  The changing colors always evoke strange emotions in me and I am excited to see them change even more dramatically in October.

Weekly Challenge 3

For this challenge I was challenged to: "Split screen: Get funky with how to frame/divide an image."  I chose to add a frame to an image and compile multiple frames to an image.
